Socrates: My preferences

1. Emanuel Lasker
2. Alexander Alekhine
3. Jose Raoul Chapablanca
4. Mikhail Botvinnik
5. Paul Keres

Why not Fischer oder Karpov or Kasparow you may ask? Well I "prefer" the playr above because the had a very long career. (Think of Lasker and Moscow 1935!)

Stormerne: Hm. Just look at the leaders of BKR (provisional) in some chess variations (and chess too). With such less games to get such high ratings ... strange.
Example Fischer Random Chess. I played it from begin here. So i rised slowly. Now ...

lukulus: Please, Mely is a very well player. But let us take his special case as example.
I started Fischer Random Chess here from beginning, since it ls available at BK. Therefore my BKR-Graph grew slowly, although my results were well.
Now it is easier to get higher at start.

This rating system is not much worth.

ColonelCrockett: In my opinion chess is not only thinking more and more moves forward ... you will get to a limes soon (of course it is position-dependent)
Look, the difference in thinking moves forward between better players and not so well players is not so big ... decisive is the ability estimating the "virtual" positions correctly.
And of course, sometimes the principles of the opening, the structure of the middlegame and so on are deep anchored in your brain when you are better .., there are typical movements and so on. So sometimes I am not really "thinking" in moves, only looking if there is some danger to me and continuing the plan.
Note: Getting 2100 is relatively easy here. I got this level soon - look at my BKR graph. But then a stagnation occured and I studied something, preparing much and so on ... now I have more than 2300, but this says nothing. Decisive will it be, if i can held my level.

ughaibu: The game Trice-Alex does not affect that what I wrote when I offer a draw.
Well, in the game Trice-Alex a draw offer all three moves wuould be strange enough, yes ... but this can not be prohibited in my opinion. draw offer every move should be only prohibited.
but maybe worth to look at: a checkbox such as "i do not accept draw offers" ...

Asunto: Re:
ughaibu: when i offer a draw, then it i do it because
a) i mean the position is in my opinion equal and
a1) the tournament can be done with the draw (depends on my rank)
a2) i am playing against a strong player and it is such as a "leading question" ... just to know a little bit more what the opponent want ;-)
b) i am in a better position bt in the tournament/match this is enough

danoschek: Maybe some people do not understand that perpetual-draw-offers are for chessplayers not only unsportsmenlike ... against the whole game.
i think the experienced chess players here know the worth of a draw-offer, often done as a leading question, but never perpetual.
altough we are playing here "virtual" draw offers are useful for psychological playing here too ... as I said: I do not like draw spammers (some from the first move in the game!)

Walter Montego: Please, let us not discuss the game you cited - we did this always here ...
In my opinion a draw offer should not be always repeated, not depending on the position. It should be discussed if there should be a rule: If you make a draw offer you can make in the next move not another offer ... (Feature Request?)

In the Chess-Tournament HIT MAN I made a little break in the marathon and played the game against Matarilevich slowly.
The little enforced combinaison at the end is not the question - the question is: is not there a better move than 29... Nd8? Can't black survive in another way earlier?

redsales: I do not know how the rules about offering draws continuosly in "real" chess. I played in a tournament in real chess years ago and my opponent offered a draw every move since the first. OK, it was easy for me, turning off my hearing aids :-) but the tournament boss recognized the continuos offer and declared the game won for me - due to unsportsmanlike behaviour.
Here in brainking i played a game in which was offered a draw every move and between the moves. My opponent did not recognize my warnings and i told it fencer ...

And what about the game EdTric against Alex? I studied it for some minutes, ok, beautiful. But without using comuter aid?

At Amazon.com i saw the book The Chess Advantage in Black and White : Opening Moves of the Grandmasters (Mckay Chess Library), written by Larry Kaufman. The book sounds good! Can tell me anybody his experiences with this book if he/she knows it?

It is a general problem of online chess playing communities, that some pleople use their chess programs as seconds.
I know some chess communities, and always after some time it was clear, when somebody used a program. So the community admin was contacted and he deleted the computer player.
In my opinion it is OK to take some looks in books, e.g. for opening variations or for endgames. Sometimes I also check online opening repositories, such as chess base.
But if someone ONLY use a program to play, it is fatal, should not be allowed. Now, we cannot control this, but as I wrote: After some time it will get clear, if somebody only use a program.
We should be honest, and I always tell my opponent, if the time for the next move will be longer, because I want to anlyze the game deeper. In one case I also used Fritz to check an endgame but I previous declared, that I want to draw the game.
