Subject: Re: L O N G L O N G Tournamentys
beach: Thank you for your homily. You will see from my profile that I joined this site about 2 weeks after you did, and have been playing here for a little over 12 years. During that time I have had a paid membership for about three years, and informed Fencer that I would renew my paid membership when he implemented a sensible autopass feature in BG. Sadly, his response was "can't be bothered" so hence I have declined to renew my paid membership. Before you tell me that there is an autopass feature, think about how much better it COULD be.

I am not actually fussed about winning or losing the tournament. As I said, I am 75 years old now, and if it goes on for another 5 years, I might well be dead, and then it will take another 7 years or so for me to time out before the next round can begin. In the end the winner will be the player who outlives all the others! What a great result THAT would be!! I am NOT upset, and it is not restricting me from playing and enjoying games. It just seems to me that taking NINE years to complete a Backgammon tournament, whatever the parameters, is just bloody ridiculous.

If less people are signing up for tournaments, maybe this is one of the reasons!

Subject: long lasting tournaments
the problem with this tournament for pgt is that he is a pawn (free) member which only allows 1 ongoing tournament

so while this tournament is not finished, he cannot join any other tournament, unless he purchases a membership

i understand his reasons not to buy a membership (read his profile), but there always 2 sides to something.

to solve the issue i think you can ask fencer to be removed from the tournament, but i am not sure if that solves it

a better solution would be to allow new tournaments for pawn players who cannot win the current running tournament anymore, and who have played all their games, as technically they arent in the tournament anymore

but requires some development :-)

5. May 2015, 02:38:03
pgt: Those players play according to the tournament's time controls. When you signed up to the tournament, you knew the time controls. The fact that you have finished your games, along with the majority of the players and they have not, does not give you the right to violate your agreement with the time controls at the expense of your rivals. What you suggest is unethical and I am sorry if you cannot understand it.

As a final reminder, this is a game site. You play games for enjoyment. You can resign any game at anytime if you no longer enjoy playing it.

As beach said, there are far more important things in life than getting upset because a tournament has not finished when you deem it should have.

Subject: Re: L O N G L O N G Tournamentys

pgt: everyone plays tournaments differently why are you upset about that tournament, I searched for it and couldn't find it.  ThunderGR is correct.  I have a tournament I am playing in that has been running for 10 years. A cloning backgammon 15 game tournament it had a 7 day time limit. Anyone playing in his type of tournament should not expect it to end quickly it won't. Nothing anyone can do about how a person chooses to play.  Most people play 3 day tournaments they might be slow by your standard but they are not my most peoples.   Some people like to play one or 2 tournaments and that's it other enjoy playing several. Some people like to make several moves in the same game in one day, others like to play several tournaments within the time frame set out. Everyone who is a paying member is capable of setting up time limits that they like to play.  Tournaments today are not the same as they were a few years ago here.  Its different now, not the same type of players either.  I play much different now then I did a few years ago.  Anyone you takes the time to set up a tournament (and I am glad that they do)  can tell you there are far less people signing up for tournaments and often its hard to get the minimum amount of players.  Only the most popular like backgammon  and ludo will get players.  There are several tournaments that  I see which are what I call superfast 1 and 2 with bonus clock.  Those are for people who want a tournament to end quickly. Myself  I know that these people want people who like to makes several moves in the same game in one day.  I choose not to sign up for those.  There is one person here who  sets them up regularly I am sure you would enjoy his tournaments.

This is a game site, try not to let it upset you, there are far more important things in life.   Well I have said my rant for the evening back to playing a few games

ThunderGr: "There is nothing anybody can do about it" - What rubbish!! There is PLENTY people could do about it if they had the will. If you had said "There is nothing we feel like doing anything about" I would have believed you.

"It is all about what most people enjoy best." - I think I am speaking for all of the people who have already qualified for the next round, and most of them several YEARS ago, that they are "most people" in your context, and I am sure that they would "enjoy best" to delete the two players who are holding things up, and get on with the tournament. The two players holding up the tournament are not "most people".

Subject: *144*Brf's 9th Annual St. Pat's Pente Tourney*144*
Here we go with another installment of Brf's 9th Annual St. Pat's Pente Tourney

Last year was a speedy tournament with Aleph and Spavacz battling out a fast Round 3 with Aleph just edging out Spav to take the win. With that behind us, we're back once again to a clean tourney slate. Noticing a trend of a 2 player finish, If this year by chance we see a final round with only 2 players, the setting will continue to be a 4 wins match so as to try and have the tournament complete in a timely fashion.

This years St Pat's Tourney has the best settings based on 8 years of tweaks for speed while ensuring a solid challenge to all players.

As usual this is a prize tournament with 1 year Brain Rook awarded to the winner. The section size has been set at 7 people per section with time limits set at 2 days per move with vacation allowed.....anything more and the tourney won't finish before the 2016 St Patty's tourney.

Though last year went really well, please keep in mind we've had quite the issue in years past of people using alternate accts (which messes with seeding) and not fessing up about it. Based on the results of THIS POLL, I'm going to be asking all such accounts (without an established Pente BKR) to let me know if this is a legit 'unrated' account or "other". If you fit into this category and I don't receive a Private Message explaining your acct situation before the tourney start time, I will remove the acct from the tournament. I'm sorry to have to do this, but please read the message boards of prior tourney's and you'll understand the debacle I'm trying to prevent.

It's almost here! Do you feel you have the Pente luck of the Irish? well sign up and see how far you can battle your way through the grids! On St.Patricks Day (March 17, 2015) the tourney begins!

My thanks to all of you who continue to sign up for this tournament every year! Good luck to all of you, I look forward to playing you across the board!

Subject: Open Tournament Count?
When I check the open tournaments, it shows a total of 1472. But when I page through, there are only 65!

What happened to the other 1407? I understand that the tournament creator can ban me from his tournaments, but a) I thought I would still see it, just can't join; and b) am I that much hated, so 96% of all tournaments are blocked for me?

Subject: Re: Open Invite: Top 10% Faster Backgammoners for 2015 3-4
Justaminute: It's still unclear who is included in that 10%.

- without provisional and without inactive players? - there are 553, so the cutoff is at 55th position which is (right now) 2302.

- with provisional but without inactive players? - there are 590, so the cutoff is at 59th position which is (right now) 2296.

- with provisional and with inactive players? - there are 6263, so the cutoff is at 626th position which is (right now) 2165.

- without provisional but with inactive players? - there are 3627, so the cutoff is at 326th position which is (right now) 2212.

If you say 'clearly, the first', what if I am inactive or my rating is provisional (or both)?

Also, nobody can know if you made the cut at any given time between now and the tournament start; someone would need to continuously check. Therefore, I assume he would check about at the tournament start, which is slightly different than at the moment you signed up. So - better let you losing games sit around a bit, or you might not make the cut anymore on that day?

Justaminute: The rating does not suffer from the same problem. Obviously, you need to be eligible at the time of registering for the tournament, not at the time the tournament starts. Nowhere in the world in any kind of tournament it is required to fulfill qualification conditions at the *start of a tournament*. Only at the time of registration.

Subject: Re: Open Invite: Top 10% Faster Backgammoners for 2015 3-4
ThunderGr: doesn't rating position/ rating suffer from the same problem.? Today i qualify but lose a game and tomorrow i don't. It doesn't seem that hard to figure out if i am in the top 10% in a game at any point, look at the number of people with ratings and divide by 10. Seems a lot off work for the organiser though because he has dcide who qualifies manually, but if he wants to do it that's his business.

15. February 2015, 16:08:42
Subject: Re: Open Invite: Top 10% Faster Backgammoners for 2015 3-4
ThunderGr: I find it also too cumbersome to check each discipline, especially as it is a moving target - I might be in today, and out tomorrow.
In addition, and I mentioned that before, the top 10% are mostly people that do not play anymore, so effectively this limits it to 2 or 3 % of active players. Which is to small a pool I think.

And finally, I am simply not good enough to make it into the top 10% of most games, so I stopped checking.

TC: I fail to see a special reason why not to create one tournament for each backgammon variation, setting the minimum rating in each.

Even if you do not want to do so, I still cannot see why not posting minimum ratings in the forum for each backgammon variation, instead of a completely unfriendly and obscure 10%. I understand politicians and media trying to confuse the population by using percentages but I am of the opinion that a tournament announcement should be as forthcoming as reasonably possible.

As I said in my first post, I do not think that you should care about my opinion on the matter, since it appears most of the people here are fine with your way of setting up these tournaments, I just said that I am not going to participate as long as it stays that way.

I am not fond of being kicked out of tournaments because the organizer did not bother giving me clear qualification requirements.

Subject: Re: Open Invite: Top 10% Faster Backgammoners for 2015 3-4
Yes, it should be easy if the tournament has only one backgammon game.
If it is preferable to arrange all backgammon game types one by one, could be arranged.

But this tournament is for all backgammon game types. Tournament creation page has not enough check and rating points to arrange user BKRs for top 10% backgammon types.

We need else to give a change to join the tournament, if he/she is inside the top 10% any type Backgammon game.

You can search all this tournament page using my alias (TC) and check some development history and ideas spoken related about on.

If you hope, wish and can arrange more acceptable tournament, I am ready to see your tournament and join it!

I else ready to break this type tournament organization and transfer to you (or interested any one of user) with pleasure!

Subject: Re: Open Invite: Top 10% Faster Backgammoners for 2015 3-4
TC: I already said 2 ideas. Post either rating limit or ranking limit. It is possible and there is no limitation imposed by the site owner. You will have to make the calculations anyway before starting the tournament.

If you use the rating limit, you can include that to your tournament creation, so that you let the site handle the legitimacy of the participants. This convenience has been included to the tournament creation *exactly* to facilitate your kind of tournament and not just for show.

Simply you check the games as you wish, and please wait when the tournament begins.
