Subject: Team Tournaments
Actually I just took a look of what team tournaments we currently have, and what games we don't have a team tournament for - so here are a few other ideas:

  • 15th most popular game - Pro Five in Line
  • 16th most popular game - Swap Five in Line
  • 31st most popular game - Fast Espionage
  • 32nd most popular game - Fischer Random Chess
  • 35th most popular game - Spider Linetris

    Plus would like to see:
  • 45th most popular game - Dark Chess
  • 47th most popular game - Small Espionage
  • 63rd most popular game - Crazy Screen Chess

Plus I skiped a couple of some-what popular games since they are not my favorite, but I guess I should mention those also:

  • 17th most popular game - Anti Backgammon
  • 20th most popular game - Battleboats

OK, that is all for now. :-)

YEA, We got 100 people to sign up for the big HYPERGammon tournament!

.... but 1 person got removed because they did not have enough game slots, so we ended up with 99 players. Not even double my original plan... :-( LOL

Ok, 59 minutes until tournament start - 99 people, who's missing???

(Pretty good turn out - one of the highest I've seen that was not a prize or an invite only tournament!)

WOW - After only 2 days, already 60 players are signed up for this tournament!

Since it filled up so quickly, I have moved up the start day to start in about 2 days, so if you are interested in a VERY BIG Hyper Backgammon tournament with already 60 players in it, there is still time to sign up!

2nd rounds will always start for pawns even if you do not have enough game slots.

HyperGammon is currently the 8th most popular game on the site - not bad for a week.

Oh, and I vote for a HyperGammon team tournament also! Lets say teams of about 6-7 players - 3-4 days per move

Subject: Re: how players get placed in groups ?
eagle eye: The smallest section that will be created is 3. The biggest I think is 8.

So if the max per section is 5, and 15 sign up - 3 sections of 5 will be created. If 16 would sign up, then 4 sections of 4 players would be created.

You can kind-of figure out who will be in your section.

Highest rank player will be in section #1.
    2nd highest rank: section #2
    3rd highest rank: section #3
    4th highest rank: section #3
    5th highest rank: section #2
    6th highest rank: section #1
    7th highest rank: section #1
    8th highest rank: section #2
.. and so on. (At least that is how I think it works!)

SORRY - I messed up the last tournament, did not set the correct settings, so I had to remove that one and start up this new one. So if you are one of the few that signed up for the previous tournament, PLEASE go and sign up again. Sorry for the trouble.

Starting Feb 2nd (Groundhog Day!), is the popular "All games for dummies" tournament!
    • All games are here!
    • All games for players rated UNDER 1500
    • Unrated also can join (but don't join if you are an expert at the game)
    • GREAT way to learn a new game
    • GREAT way to play a game without being "killed" by high ranked experts
    • NOTE #1: Since ratings do change before the tournament starts, I will remove anyone who is way over the 1500 limit
    • NOTE #2: Pawns & Knights need 5 free game slots for each game
    • S I G N - U P - H E R E !
    • ... and as always, have fun!

troydaniels: 10 is correct. (Even though you may start up to 14 games to take you over your limit), the computer only checks for 10 free spaces to start.

If it was only one game for each two players, you would only need 5 free spaces.

Well I guess it was beter to have someone to enter the tournament then to not be able to enter the tournament at all.

An idea would be to possible allow teams to enter with less players, and just enter a "ghost" player that will just take 2 game loses for the team - BUT would allow the rest of the team to enter.

    1) My tournaments: I'll start them back up soon - I've just been behind in many of my games & other stuff I decided to take a short break in making them. I should be making them by the first of the year.

    2) Auto-vacation - This is a good rule which may get abused by a few people. The only 2 rules I would like to see applied to auto-vacations are:
    • Some tournament set to allow no vacation days
    • Limit to 5 autovacation days at one time (giving a player a week to be able to get back on-line to set normal vacation days if needed)

Fencer - when you do have it possible to have tournaments/games with no vacation days allowed - hopefully they will show up on the game sheet a little differently, or able to sort no vacation games a little differently in case you do plan to take a vacation, you can try to hurry and play those game quickly. :-)

    Subject: Year 2005 Tournaments
Back on January 1, 2004, I started 2 new year tournaments. Well Year 2005 is near, so 2 new year 2005 tournaments have been created!

    Details on tournaments:

  • 5 days to move
  • 5 player per section
  • 1 tournament for 1 games each, other is 2 games each
  • Both to start on January 1, 2005 - 0:00 time acourding to BK Server time. (So to start right after the clocks turn to 2005!)
  • Signup's open to everyone!
  • Check out tournament for any more details

    To sign up:

    Good luck to all!

Also to those who have asked, I will start back up the "Fast Start" tournament after the first of the year (or maybe before if I can get caught up on things.)

  • 1. December 2004, 22:30:42

Lets take a look at those numbers....

12 players per team, at least 4 teams to start the tournament, at least 48 players needed to start that tournament. Currently 352 rooks and above. Minus the rooks and above which are not active, you get 335. Most knights that play in team tournament are probable already on a team, so probable will not be able to join this one. So basicly, about 15% of the active available players, or about 1 out of 7 rooks and above will have to join to make this tournament possible.

(and if you remove the rooks and above who are not even in any fellowships, that will also change the numbers.)

Oh yea, it was not my idea in case anyone was wondering. :-)

    23. November 2004, 22:28:16
    coan.net
.... My fellowship has 14 active players that are on the Backgammon team able to sign up... 8 will be left out. :-(

But I already said how I felt about multiply teams - just think the "power" fellowship will end up dominating. But if it were to happen, I would be happy to field 2 teams! :-)

That's cool. With 6, there should still be plenty of teams... and hopefully not many who will be left out of the tournament. :-)

Wow - only 4 player teams for the Backgammon team - most popular game on the site! There are going to be a lot of different teams (and probable some people left without teams) :-(

Lets see..... Lets make other suggestions for team tournaments:

    Crowded Gammon (6 player team)
    Halma 8x8 (4 player team)
    Line4 (5 player team)
Crazy Screen Chess (4 player team)

    :-)

Having 2 teams from 1 fellowship may end up leaving some other fellowships without enough people to play - leaving some of the "bigger" fellowship just playing each other teams.

I also vote for another Backgammon Team Tournaments (since the first one is complete)

... and it's not a record - there was a time which you could choose the "year" back to 2002, but I think Fencer changed it to only include 2004 & 2005. (Use to be able to set the date up to 2024, but again Fencer changed it.) :-)

Most emergencies will probable take more then 1 day. I also think that having it unlimited is a little too much (up to 30 days + weekends and such for rooks). With a limit of 4 or 5, it will give about a week extra time - which I think would not be too much to ask for people in an emergency.

    6. November 2004, 16:20:23
    coan.net
what would you think if there was a limit of 4 or 5 days for autovacation to take at one time?

    5. November 2004, 21:26:05
    coan.net
A second round will start even if you do not have enough slots available.

So with a second round starting, it is possible to be over your game limit. (of course you would then not be able to start any new games until you are under the limit.)

    5. November 2004, 19:55:08

Why would we need a special rook membership without the ability to create fellowships - we have that, it's called a Knight membership basicly!

Maybe a "trial" 2 month Knight for 5 EUR or something?

    2. November 2004, 16:51:23

... but then who would keep improving this site??? :-)

    31. October 2004, 19:18:28
    coan.net
yea.. and if you don't offer a choice, or take away something that is already here - you will also upset many knights who would not upgrade at all.

    31. October 2004, 19:10:54
    coan.net
Buy why? Many knights barley even use more then what they get as Pawns, and don't need the features of a rook. If they had a choice of either paying more, or just droping a few games - many would probable just drop a few games.

    31. October 2004, 19:03:00
    coan.net
I think it would end up losing money for BrainKing.

If the price is the same as the rook for everything, some knights would not pay since they barley use what they have now. If the price was the same as a knight, with the option to donate more - well then many users like myself will spend just what we need to get the membership, and not donate anything more.

    coan.net
You know I liked the idea at first of having a limit of 1 team tournament for knights, but I would like to see that rules lifted.

The only problem I would see is if a team signed up a knight member, then when the tournament is about to start and that knight is over the 50 game limit, it would cause problems for the whole team.

But again, think it would be a good idea to find a way so knights can enter more team tournaments.

Ok, I see the Players Result tables now also. I looked at the tournament while it was in the "waiting" stage to start round 3 of the tournament, so I'm guessing that during the hour it was in this "waiting stage", that it must not have had that link.

... yea, just as I suspected... the tournament creator who was on the winning team plus winning all his games also has access to the site code.... Can someone say conspiracy??? LOL

I would agree that backgammon is the one game that can support a bigger team (possible up to 10 players), but on the flip side - it might mean less number of total teams.

2 games per opponent? Why? Backgammon is one of the games that does not really have an advantage for one player over the other, plus currently there are less and less players signing up for team tournaments (and double games may keep them away), plus with only 1 game per opponent - the team tournament might complete sooner.

Other then that, I 2nd the 2nd request for fencer to add the 2nd backgammon team tournament.
