I think i read something about a limit and "20" on the Czech board...so i'm guessing it was a question asking if the pawn's 20 game limit applies to tournament games too. The problem is i do not understand czech, so i could not pick out the answer. I'm just curious, but do the tournament games count towards the pawn and knight game limit? Thanks!

8. December 2002, 12:53:55
Fencer
Yes, the tournament games count towards the game limit. But this first tournament is an exception because I need to test the tournament system as much as possible. Currently the only limitation is that a pawn can join only one tournament.
But the next regular tournaments will be defined with some restrictions. For example if a player sings up for a tournament but when the sign-up process is finished and he/she doesn't have enough empty slots for new games, the player will be removed from this tournament.

Emne: Re:
How about, if someone signs up for a tourny and when it starts they don't have enough slots open they can play but as soon as a regular game is done it takes that spot and no more game s can be taken? To difficult or to many variables?

9. December 2002, 11:40:46

Just a quickie, I've never played in a tournament before, exactly how many empty slots do you need?

9. December 2002, 14:38:04
Fencer
7 for one tournament [or less, depending on total number of players].

9. December 2002, 14:40:41
harley
But a maximum of seven? Wow, thats a lot! I guess theres plenty of warning to get those empty slots on each tourney though?

I've written something in FAQ about that.

Emne: Another question on touraments
I hope I word this right as it makes sense in my head but don't know if I can make sense in typing it. A friend who is a non member asked me this and I had no idea. Right now if a player have 13 games they can take a tournament game. But what happens if they make it to round 2 and just before round 2 starts they are maxed out at 20 games. Do they forfeit round 2 or will the tournament progress with them playing more then 20 games? If someone else has asked this I am sorry I cant find the answer to it.

10. December 2002, 21:15:19
harley
Could I ask another too? (sorry!)
If you need seven spaces for one tournament, does that mean if you join two games, say, one Tablut and one Reversi, you need 14 spaces? And 21 if you sign up for, say, chess too? Or is it just 7 per whole tournament, no matter how many different types of game you sign up for?

11. December 2002, 07:08:28
Fencer
1) About round 2, the second possibility [playing more than 20 games] is more probable.
2) Yes, 7 [or less] spaces for one game type. If you sign up for all 21 games, you would need up to 147 spaces. Good motivation to upgrade to Brain Rook, eh? ;-)

Let me see if I get this...if I am a pawn, I can only be plaing 13 games when the tourny starts?

I have 50 slots, but think it says somewhere that you are giving a month free with sign up? What is this about? Does it increase your slots or does that stay the same? BARB

Emne: Re: Membership.
As long as you remain a knight you will still have a limit of 50 games at a time. The extra month is simply that...you will get 13 months if you pay for 12, or 7 months if you pay for 6 :-)

Looks like we'll have a tournament of all game types except Fortress Chess since only 3 players signed up for this game type tourney and the minimum of players is 4. Any volunteer to fix it up? ;-)

I'll sign up once my membership comes through!! Should be with you well before the last day to sign up.

i suggest it will be the first and last horde chess tournament. It is not a fair game, with 2 good players white always wins

What happens if you are signed up for a tournament and someone on you enemies list is also signed up? Is it possible to end up playing that person? Just curious how that would work!

30. December 2002, 18:37:46
Fencer
No, this is a tournament rule, like for real tournaments. You cannot choose who you are playing with.

Emne: ?
i read the FAQS but was curious...i hate keep bringin up other sites but at other ones when ya play tourney games you play 2 games against each opponent...one of each color...here we play only one game against each...i have no problem with this...but i always hear people say when ya go first or last someone may have an advantage?...personally when i play four in a row games of any type i like to go first i seem to do better when i do it that way but thats me...what my question is ,is this..does goin first or last in ANY game give someone an advantage? or are they all equal? i was just wonderin due to a few people asks me why we only play one game i did read the faqs and understand how the tourney works.. was just wonderin if you get an advantage of any type for goin first or last?..ok the noodleman is done askin questions hopefully anyone esle that was thinkin about this also it will help them....later fellow brain heads....

Emne: Re: ?
Yes it does make a difference. Games like 5 in a line, Reversi, 4iar(?) & chess can all be shown to have a bias toward the person going first (although some really good 4iar players prefer going 2nd) at the end of the day, the better player should win, but with a match between two even players, it could make a difference.

Emne: Re: ?
how so? because when ya go first you are on the offense? and goin second you have to start on defense? so to speak?

Emne: Re: ?
(you are talking about 4iar?) I am not sure, and I am not good enough to be in that bracket but some top rated guys & gals have stated that against lower ranked players ( and some all the time ), they prefer to go second!

Ask someone like McStack on GT, he is a truly awesome player, and know far more than I do!

Emne: 4iar strategy
Here is my 2 cents on the subject.
The 7x6 board is solved mathematically, and proven a first-player win, presented by L.Victor Allis in his master thesis: "A Knowledge-based Approach of Connect-Four (1989)" The 8x8 board however has not to my knowledge been subject of the same research, and amongst players on IYT and GT it has often been discussed if the first or second player has the advantage. McStack has pointed out, that the first player is the first being able to make a weak move and therefore the second player has an advantage with defensive play. My personal feeling based is on this, and the fact that the second player have more possible winning combinations, are that second player in most games, has the advantage. First player can in my opinion, by playing "perfect", only achieve a draw in many openings, with time I´d might even argue that the 8x8 board is a tie!
For tournament strategy I´d prefer to play 2 games one of each color, against each opponent, this opens for a more fair and strategically challenging 4iar tournaments.

9. Januar 2003, 19:22:24
Fencer
About tournaments, if you play 2 games of each color and white has better chances to win, then the result will be mostly 1:1, won't it? So there is no difference between playing both-color games with three opponents and one game with each of 7 opponents in the section. I personally prefer the current solution. But I can support the mentioned tournament type later. The first tournament is only one type of all tournaments I plan to implement.

Emne: Re:
Hi Fencer, in games like horde chess or maharadja chess it gives a great advantage for one color.
For example: if you play in a tourney horde chess and play 4 times black and 3 times white you normally win 3 games and loose 4

10. Januar 2003, 08:03:38
Fencer
Uil: Yes, that's right. Please take this first tournament as an experimental one :-)
